Florida CFO Jeff Atwater Named Honorary Chairman

American political satirist and journalist P.J. O’Rourke will be the featured speaker at the inaugural Hospice Heart Luncheon on Friday, October 7, at the Hilton West Palm Beach.

The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. and tickets (priced at $150 per person and $1,250 per table of 10) may be purchased by calling (561) 494-6888 or by visiting www.hpbcf.org

Presented by PNC, all proceeds raised from the Hospice Heart Luncheon will benefit Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation and Hospice by the Sea Foundation.

“We certainly expect that P.J. O’Rourke will offer a brilliant and humorous look at the ongoing political season,” said Greg Leach, Foundation President. “We encourage everyone to purchase their tickets as quickly as possible as seating is limited for P.J.’s only scheduled area appearance. We’re looking forward to raising funds for special services that help hospice patients and families during their most difficult time.”

Joining O’Rourke at the event will be Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, Jeff Atwater, who will serve as the event’s Honorary Chairman. A fifth-generation Floridian, Atwater was first elected Florida’s CFO in 2010 and was reelected in 2014. His commitment to public service began in 1993, when his hometown of North Palm Beach elected him Vice Mayor. Atwater has also served in the House of Representatives, and the Florida Senate.

A Toledo, Ohio native, O’Rourke is the H.L. Mencken Research Fellow at the Cato Institute and is a regular correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly, The American Spectator, and The Weekly Standard. He has been a frequent panelist on National Public Radio’s game show Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! and has also been a columnist at The Daily Beast since 2011.

“Sometimes, as a political humorist, I feel like I should apologize,” said O’Rourke. “What good does political humor do? Boy, we political humorists have made a lot of fun of these two presidential candidates. And, look, we’ve still got them.

“But, humor lowers stress. And, that’s a good thing, especially this election year. And, humor lowers inhibitions. If humor lowers inhibitions about giving generous contributions to a great cause like Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation and Hospice by the Sea Foundation, that’s a good thing too.”

O’Rourke is the author of 20 books, including the one he will discuss at the Hospice Heart Luncheon – Don’t Vote, It Just Encourages the Bastards. Using his signature wit and keen observational skills, O’Rourke reflects on his 40-year career as a political commentator, spanning his confused hippie youth to his current state of right wing grouch maturity. The book is a hilarious and sobering look at why politics and politicians are a necessary evil – but only just barely necessary.
