John J. Brogan Horizons Bereavement Center

The John J. Brogan Horizons Bereavement Center, a program of Hospice of Palm Beach County, offers many different services and support to assist people facing life-changing events. Coping with the difficulties surrounding these events may require new skills or just the ability to talk with others who are living through similar experiences.

Assistance is available to anyone in the community who has experienced a loss – families, adults, teens and children. Our grief-related services are offered at no charge to the families and friends of hospice patients. Reading materials about the grief process and mourning are provided upon request or as part of our counseling and group support. To learn more about our programs or for more information, please call (561) 227-5175.

Grief Support Groups

Support groups are offered at different times and locations throughout the county. These are designed to provide an opportunity for individuals to share their grief safely and have contact with others who have had similar losses. Anyone wishing to attend a support group will first be seen individually by a bereavement counselor.

"The Nature of Grief" Workshop Series

Nature of Grief is a series of three classes for bereaved adults and is provided as a community service by Hospice of Palm Beach County.

The purpose is to offer participants education in the following areas:

Part 1 - Initial overview of the grief process
Part 2 - Coping with grief
Part 3 - What do I do now?

Each class is open to the community and is free of charge. Classes are offered in a variety of locations throughout Palm Beach County during the day and evening. It is suggested that all three classes be taken in sequence.

For more information or directions, call the John J. Brogan Horizons Bereavement Center at (561) 227-5175 or register online here.

Commemorative Bricks encircle the Hospice of Palm Beach County Angel Statue. They are a tribute to the memory of your beloved child, who can be any age, from parents, grandparents, siblings and other loved ones and will become a permanent part of the children's memorial at Kelsey Park in Lake Park. Bricks are sold for $100 each with the proceeds supporting the SHARE Program. Click here to purchase a brick online.

"Coping with the Holidays" Program
Holidays and special occasions can be overwhelming and magnify grief issues. This program is provided for all ages to gather together to learn some coping strategies to deal with these special days.

Camp Sea Star Retreat / Changing Horizons

Bereavement camps for children and teens that have received services are offered through the Bereavement Center. "Changing Horizons," is an adult bereavement camp. Both programs allow time for sharing, support, celebration and fun.

sea starOur Sea Star - When a sea star looses one of its rays – it has the ability to grow back or regenerate.

Notice that one ray always shows a line through it. This line is to acknowledge the pain of our loss and that we have been changed forever. It is also a reminder that the people we love will always be remembered and will always be a part of our lives.

Our sea star, however, will always be shown whole, with all of its rays intact. We believe that this symbolizes another tremendously important message; the belief that grief can transcend into a journey of healing.

Community Outreach

Our staff provides educational presentations, interventions and training sessions throughout the community. We offer these services to area businesses, schools, agencies and places of worship. Additional workshops, events and services may be offered throughout the year.

Pet Loss

Workshops and support groups are available for the often overlooked grief experience following the loss of a beloved pet.

Children's Grief Support

The John J. Brogan Horizons Bereavement Center also provides support for children experiencing anticipatory grief or for children who have a family member with a serious illness. Bereavement intervention is available for children as well. Depending on the needs of the child and family, this intervention may include: individual, family or group support services, music and/or art therapy.
